Australia’s preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026 have taken a hit just days before the tournament begins. Star fast bowler Pat Cummins has been ruled out due to a back injury that has been troubling him since the Ashes. The injury hasn’t healed in time, forcing Australia to move ahead without one of their most experienced pacers.
The 15-member squad was confirmed by Cricket Australia on January 31, with the marquee event scheduled to begin next week in India and Sri Lanka. Mitchell Marsh will lead a strong but slightly reshuffled team as they chase their second T20 World Cup title.
Cummins Out, Smith and Short Left Out Too
Cummins is not the only notable name missing from the lineup. Senior batter Steve Smith and explosive all-rounder Matt Short have also been omitted from the final squad. These decisions highlight Australia’s shift toward a younger, more dynamic unit for this edition of the tournament.
Ben Dwarshuis Replaces Cummins
Selector Tony Dodemaide confirmed that left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis has been included as Cummins’ replacement. He shared the reasoning behind the move, appreciating Dwarshuis’ skill set and suitability to subcontinental conditions.
Dodemaide noted that with Cummins needing additional recovery time, Dwarshuis stands out as a ready and reliable option. His ability to swing the ball at good pace, combine variations, contribute in the field and offer late-order hitting helped him earn the spot.
Australia’s Group Stage Schedule
Australia has been placed in Group B alongside Ireland, Oman, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. They begin their World Cup journey on February 11 in Colombo. Here is their group stage schedule:
